The autobiography of the renowned Rabindra Sangeet artist Bijoya Chowdhury, "Syleter Konyar Atmakatha" (The Life Story of a Daughter of Sylhet), spans across Undivided India, starting from Assam and travelling through Britain, extending all the way to Mumbai city. This autobiography touches upon both the sharp and soft notes (sharps and flats) of life simultaneously.Although she gained fame as a musical artist, her journey originally began as a dancer. During Durga Puja in Sylhet, local neighborhood boys would organize theater. In that theater, along with other child artists, Bijoya would dance in a group wearing colorful scarves. Lending her voice to the songs performed alongside these dances marked the beginning of her singing career.Right from her childhood, the remarkable sign of her musical talent caught the attention of connoisseurs and experts. Alongside her music, during her time in London, she also held a responsible job at the Indian High Commission. In her early life, she received Kumud Ranjan Goswami, a famous musical personality of Sylhet, as her mentor/guru. Under his guidance, she received training in classical music, Rabindra Sangeet, and bhajans. In addition, through her own efforts, she would practice and learn songs of Kundan Lal Saigal, Pankaj Kumar Mullick, Kanak Das, Malati Ghoshal, and others on the harmonium.Bijoya got her first opportunity to sing on the radio at the 'Shillong-Gauhati' radio station. Her recordings of Rabindra Sangeet and some Hindi bhajans released by HMV, Music India, and other companies gained considerable popularity.
