The book deals with different feminist theories such as liberal feminism, Marxist feminism, post modern feminism, and the writings of some French feminists. The author analyzes patriarchy through writings of “dual systems” theorists such as Hartmann, Young, Nicholson, Hartsock who theorize that patriarchy is generated by women’s surplus labor in the household as well as through low wage employment. The book deals with the work of radical feminist such as Shulamith Firestone for whom patriarchy is generated via the control of women’s sexualities and reproductive systems. The book analyzes French feminist theorists such as Irigary, Wittig and Julia Kristeva. The author also discusses important issues such as the construction of the feminine self and the relation between women and the State and women and civil society.
Rinita Mazumdar obtained her Ph.D in Philosophy from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She has two Masters Degrees, one from Brock University, Ontario, Canada and another from Calcutta University. She is currently affiliated to the Departments of Philosophy and Women Studies at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. She is also a part-time instructor of Philosophy at the Central New Mexico Community College, Albuquerque. Before joining the University of New Mexico, Professor Mazumdar taught at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, at Philip’s and Palo Alto Community Colleges at San Antonio, Texas. Rinita has published several articles in Philosophy and Feminist Theory in India and the United States. Her books include Introduction to Feminist Theory, Understanding Gender, and Feminine Sexuality. She has also translated Jaya Mitra’s Hanyaman from the original Bengali into English and a book of feminist poetry called “Behula’s Dream”.
