In the present volume, a comparative discussion has been undertaken between several important conclusions of one of the greatest philosophers of the Western tradition, Kant, and certain doctrines of ancient Indian philosophy. In a number of areas, the differences between the two traditions—both in the context in which questions are raised and in their respective approaches to answering those questions—have been analytically examined. While discussing the position of Indian philosophers with regard to Kant’s theory of a priori knowledge, the standpoint of Vedānta philosophy has been presented. In analyzing Kant’s ethics, reference has been made to the concept of niṣkāma karma (desireless action) in the Bhagavad Gītā. The absence of a systematic theoretical discourse on ethics within Indian philosophy has also been explained.
